In this guide
UK pensions, including the State Pension, are normally taxed only in Jersey, at no more than 20 per cent, and the UK State Pension keeps its yearly increases. Hospital care beyond the Emergency Department is free after twelve months' residence if you are not working, and the long-term care scheme needs ten years. A couple renting a two-bed flat should budget about £4,200 a month on our estimate, before private medical insurance.
In the 2021 census, 29 per cent of residents were born elsewhere in the British Isles and 18,376 were over 65. But the island rations housing, and its safety nets take time to reach newcomers.
The right to live here, and the housing catch
British and Irish citizens need no immigration permission, so there is no retirement visa. What controls your life here is the Control of Housing and Work Law, which gives every resident a status.
Unless you come through the high value route below, a retiree arrives on Standard status, which replaced "Registered" status on 14 September 2026. You may rent one Registered property as your main home. You cannot buy a freehold home, but you can buy a share transfer flat that is Registered property and live in it; few flats are both, so ask an advocate to confirm the category before you offer. Registered property is a smaller, generally pricier slice of the market, concentrated in and around St Helier.
After ten years' continuous residence you become Entitled and can rent or buy anything, so arrive at 65 and the earliest you can buy a freehold home is 75. If your partner already holds Entitled or Permanent Entitled status, for example as an islander by birth, your options are wider. Our housing qualifications guide has the detail.
| When | What changes for a retiree |
|---|---|
| Arrival | Standard status: one Registered rental, or buy a Registered share transfer flat. Emergency Department free. Tax resident |
| 6 months | Health card, if you have paid Social Security contributions. Class 2 contributions start if under pension age |
| 12 months | Hospital care free if you are not working |
| 5 years | Entitled for Work Only. Income Support residence rule usually met |
| 10 years | Entitled: buy or rent anything. Long-term care scheme residence rule met |
The high value residency route
Wealthy retirees can apply for high value residency (formerly 2(1)(e)), which gives Entitled status from arrival. Since 14 September 2026 it is granted under Regulation 5 of the housing law when the new Housing and Work Control Panel recommends it on economic or social grounds. The housing law sets no financial threshold, but the published indicators and tax rules point to:
- taxable income of more than £1.25 million a year in Jersey for at least ten years;
- philanthropy of at least £100,000 a year, or equivalent time;
- a minimum tax payment of £250,000 a year: 20 per cent on the first £1.25 million of worldwide income and 1 per cent above.
As of October 2026 gov.je still lists minimum purchase prices of £3.5 million for a house and £1.75 million for an apartment, though the Panel is reported to be considering whether these should apply only after approval. The September 2026 indicators include no net worth test, though Locate Jersey's criteria page still lists assets over £10 million, so check. Locate Jersey quotes a 15 working day turnaround.
How your pensions are taxed
Move here to stay and you are tax resident from the day you arrive, on your worldwide income. Pensions are taxed like other income: 20 per cent at most, or less under marginal relief, which charges 26 per cent on income above a £21,250 exemption threshold in 2026. Each partner is taxed independently with their own threshold, and there is no extra allowance for pensioners.
A retiree with £30,000 of pension income and no other allowances pays about £2,275 of income tax (26 per cent of the £8,750 above the threshold) plus about £170 of long-term care contribution. Above roughly £92,000 you simply pay 20 per cent.
The double tax arrangement. Under the UK and Jersey arrangement in force since 2019, pensions paid to a Jersey resident are taxable only in Jersey. That covers the UK State Pension and private and workplace pensions. A UK provider deducts UK tax until HMRC accepts your exemption claim on form DT-Individual, so file early. Pensions for UK government service, such as the civil service, fall under a separate article: the UK keeps the right to tax them, and while you live in Jersey, Jersey taxes them too and gives credit for the UK tax. Take advice before you rely on either.
Lump sums. Jersey taxes a lump sum from an overseas scheme, including a UK one, where it exceeds 30 per cent of the fund's net value. Take advice on both sides before you draw one.
Retiring before pension age. After six months here without working, you are liable for Class 2 Social Security contributions based on your income, including rental and investment income. Credits or exemptions can apply, and contributions stop at pension age.
The UK State Pension is uprated here. Jersey has a social security agreement with the UK and is on the UK Government's list of places where pensioners usually get the yearly increase.
UK inheritance tax can follow your worldwide estate for several years after you leave; our tax guide explains.
Jersey's own pension and Pension Plus
Jersey's Social Security pension is contributory. You need at least four and a half years of contributions to get anything, and you receive a proportion of the full rate based on your record; a full pension needs 45 to 47 years, so a late arrival builds little. Pension age is 65 to 67, depending on your date of birth. In October 2026 gov.je listed the full pension at £312.48 a week. UK contributions can help you meet the minimum but cannot increase what Jersey pays.
Pension Plus is means tested. You must be over pension age with either a Jersey Social Security pension or Entitled status, your household must pay no more than £1,000 a year in Jersey income tax, and your assets, excluding your home, must be under £64,000. It helps with dental bills (up to £1,900 every four years for treatment), glasses and chiropody.
Healthcare for retirees
Jersey is not in the NHS, and the UK reciprocal health agreement covers visitors only, so it ends when you move.
- GP visits always cost money. Without a health card you pay the full fee, typically £85 to £100. With one, a £50.28 Government subsidy brings the average to just under £34, and GP prescriptions are free. The card needs six months' residence and Social Security contributions; if you are over pension age and paying none, ask Social Security how you qualify.
- The Emergency Department and ambulance are free from arrival.
- Other hospital care, including admission, outpatients and surgery, is chargeable until you have lived here continuously for twelve months if you are not working (six if you work). Until then you may also pay for off-island evacuation and travel on UK referrals.
Keep private medical insurance, including evacuation cover, until you have confirmed your eligibility. Adult dentistry is private. See our healthcare guide.
Long-term care
Everyone who pays Jersey income tax, pensioners included, pays a long-term care contribution of up to 1.5 per cent of income, capped at £331,584 of income in 2026. The proposed 2027 Budget (September 2026) would raise it in steps to 2.5 per cent by 2030.
The catch: you pay in from your first year but cannot claim until you have lived here as an adult for the ten years before you apply, or for ten years in the past plus at least a year recently. Until then, plan to fund any care yourself. Once you qualify, gov.je listed these figures in October 2026:
| Element | Figure |
|---|---|
| Standard care, weekly maximum | Level 1 £547.12, rising to Level 4 £1,516.62 |
| Care cost cap, after which the scheme pays standard care | £80,694.90 single, £121,042.35 couple |
| Assets, including your home, below which the Government helps from the start | £419,000 |
Care homes set their own fees, and residents also pay for room and food.
What it costs a retired couple
From our cost of living guide, as of October 2026:
- A two-bed flat rents for about £1,600 to £2,500 a month on asking prices, and Registered property tends to cost more for the same size.
- The guide's budget for a couple in a two-bed flat with one car comes to about £4,190 a month. Add private medical insurance and full GP fees until you have a health card.
- There is no council tax or road tax, and petrol is cheaper than the UK. Food costs more, partly because of 5 per cent GST.
- When you can buy, Statistics Jersey's Q2 2026 mean prices were £580,000 for a two-bed flat and £797,000 for a three-bed house.
So how much money do you need? There is no financial test for British citizens, but on our budget a couple renting should plan on spending at least £50,000 a year, plus tax and insurance.
Practical considerations
Flights to family. British Airways flies to Heathrow and Gatwick, easyJet to eight UK airports, and Loganair to regional airports including Bristol and Southampton. DFDS car ferries run to Poole and Portsmouth. Our cost of living guide budgets about £150 a month for a couple's two trips home a year.
Climate. Over 1991 to 2020 the island averaged 2,092 hours of sunshine a year, mean daily temperatures of 7.0°C in January and 18.4°C in August, and 918mm of rain. In 2024 it was the sunniest place in the British Isles.
Community. Parish life is the way in. Parishes rely on volunteers, including Honorary Police officers; St Saviour recruits residents aged 21 to 70.
Pros and cons
- For: 20 per cent maximum income tax, no capital gains or inheritance tax, an uprated UK State Pension, plenty of sunshine and frequent UK flights.
- Against: ten years before you can buy or get long-term care help, scarce Registered rentals, GP fees, first-year hospital charges and high living costs.

Frequently asked questions
Can I retire to Jersey from the UK?
Yes. British and Irish citizens need no visa. Without a job you arrive on Standard status, so you can rent one Registered property and cannot buy a freehold home until you become Entitled after ten years, unless you are granted high value residency. A share transfer flat that is Registered property is the exception.
Are UK pensions taxed in Jersey?
Yes. Under the UK and Jersey double tax arrangement, pensions paid to a Jersey resident are taxable only in Jersey, at up to 20 per cent. Claim exemption from HMRC on form DT-Individual. UK government service pensions follow a separate rule.
Is the UK state pension uprated in Jersey?
Yes. Jersey has a social security agreement with the UK and is on the UK Government's list of places where State Pension recipients usually get the yearly increase.
Is healthcare free for retirees in Jersey?
Not at first. The Emergency Department is free from arrival; other hospital care is free after twelve months' continuous residence if you are not working. GP visits always cost money, and the health card subsidy needs six months' residence and contributions.
Can a retiree buy a house in Jersey?
Not on Standard status. You can buy once you become Entitled after ten years' continuous residence, or straight away with high value residency, which expects more than £1.25 million of taxable income a year.
