If you are not British or Irish you need a work permit, which only the employer can apply for: temporary permits last up to nine months, or 12 months in hospitality, construction and fishing. The minimum wage is £13.59 an hour from 1 April 2026, and an employer can count no more than £152.60 a week for accommodation, or £203.35 with meals, towards it. Shared staff accommodation sits outside the tenancy law, and a home tied to your job can be ended on seven days' notice when the job ends.

For a newcomer on Standard status, housing is usually harder to find than work, as our renting guide shows, so a job with a room solves the biggest problem at a stroke. It also ties your home to your employer.

Which jobs come with accommodation

Hospitality. As our jobs guide notes, some hotels advertise staff accommodation with their vacancies, usually "subject to availability", and hospitality is the lowest paid sector. The peak season runs from April to September, according to the Government, though the Jersey Hospitality Association told a States review in 2023 that the industry works all year round.

Agriculture. Large growers house many of their seasonal staff. In September 2025 one large potato grower said it employed up to 300 migrant workers and did not have enough accommodation for all of them. Its workers lived in everything from portable cabins to block-built flats and farm cottages, most rented from former farmers and restricted to agricultural workers.

Care. Some home-care providers advertise live-in carer roles, where you live in the client's home and support them there. Healthcare assistants in eligible settings can qualify for Licensed for Lease Only status, which opens up the wider rental market.

Nanny and household work. Live-in nanny, housekeeper and couple roles in Jersey are advertised by household staffing agencies as well as by families directly.

How staff accommodation fits the housing law

Your status still decides where you can live. On Standard status, staff accommodation must be Registered property, unless you live in someone's home: Article 17 of the Control of Housing and Work (Jersey) Law 2012 lets a person live in a home with the consent of someone who holds the right status and lives there as their main home, which is how a live-in nanny or carer can share a household. Licensed staff can also live in Qualified property; our housing qualifications guide has the full table.

The tenancy law usually does not apply. The Residential Tenancy (Jersey) Amendment Law 2025, in force since 15 April 2026, covers only self-contained homes, so staff accommodation with a shared kitchen or bathroom falls outside it, and outside deposit protection. Our guide to rooms to rent explains what protections lodgers do have.

If it is a self-contained flat, you have a tenancy, but with a short fuse. The law lets a landlord end a tenancy granted in connection with your work on seven days' written notice once that work has ended, whether or not the landlord is your employer. The same seven days applies if a work permit you need has not been obtained or applied for. Eviction still needs a court order.

Employers of permit holders have a duty. Jersey's work permit policy requires employers to ensure staff are adequately accommodated to minimum standards that support their health and wellbeing.

What an employer can charge

The minimum wage is £13.59 an hour from 1 April 2026. Where the employer provides accommodation, the Employment (Minimum Wage) (Jersey) Order 2007 caps how much of its value can count towards that wage. From 1 April 2026:

Employer provides Maximum per week Maximum per day Trainee rate, per week
Accommodation only £152.60 £21.80 £117.95
Accommodation and food £203.35 £29.05 £157.15

The rules behind them:

  • The accommodation must be available to you from midnight to midnight on each day you are employed.
  • Food means three adequate meals a day, and food cannot be counted unless accommodation is provided too.
  • Nothing else counts. Bills such as electricity cannot be offset against the minimum wage.
  • If you pay more than the cap, the excess reduces your pay for minimum wage purposes. If the room is free, the employer can count up to the cap as part of your pay.

A worked example: 40 hours at £13.59 is £543.60 a week. The most an employer can charge for a room is £152.60, leaving £391.00 before tax and social security. Charge £200 instead and the extra £47.40 takes pay to about £12.41 an hour, below the legal minimum.

On higher pay the cap rarely bites, but the work permit policy says deductions must be set out in the contract and be affordable and proportionate. It notes that in 2024 minimum wage workers had about 27 per cent of their wages deducted for accommodation, or 36 per cent with food. When checked on 29 October 2026, the policy still quoted 2025 caps of £146.02 and £194.60; the minimum wage order is the current law.

Employers must keep records of accommodation and food deductions. If you think you have been underpaid, ask for your pay records in writing; if the employer does not respond within 14 days, you can complain to the employment tribunal within 13 weeks.

Work permits and "visa sponsorship"

Jersey has its own work permit system, run by the Jersey Customs and Immigration Service, and what job sites call visa sponsorship means an employer applying for one of these permits. British and Irish citizens need no permit. EU and EEA nationals with settled or pre-settled status, and people on the Youth Mobility Scheme, are exempt. Everyone else needs a permit, and the rules, last updated in January 2026, are strict about who does what:

  • The employer applies and pays. You cannot apply yourself, and the employer cannot deduct permit or recruitment agency costs from your wages.
  • Timing. Allow about three weeks for the permit and about three more for the visa after your visa centre appointment. Employers can apply up to three months before the start date.
Permit Sectors Length Afterwards
Short-term temporary Agriculture, aquaculture, horticulture, construction, hospitality, sea-going fishing Up to 9 months 3 months away from Jersey
Annual temporary Construction, hospitality, sea-going fishing 12 months, renewable to 36 (48 in construction) About a third of the time spent, starting at 4 months
Skilled Jobs at RQF Level 3 (A level standard) or above, with English at B1 Up to 3 years at first Family can join if the permit runs over 12 months

Temporary permit holders cannot bring dependants, and the time does not count towards settlement. The employer must pay at least the going rate for a 40-hour week, in a signed contract, and must pay your contracted hours even when there is no work. Household jobs such as nannying are not on the temporary list; other sectors need a business case to the Customs and Immigration Service.

The employer also needs permission under the housing and work law to employ you on Standard status, which gov.je says will generally be supported for short-term seasonal workers and temporary permit holders. Our jobs guide covers the pay thresholds for permanent roles.

When to apply

For the summer hospitality season, recruitment happens in winter. In the Government-backed scheme that brought hospitality staff from Antigua and Barbuda in 2023, employers registered vacancies in January and February and recruitment was due to finish by 10 March, for arrivals in April. With permits allowed up to three months ahead and taking about six weeks including the visa, January to March is the window for an April start. For farm work, ask growers when their intake starts.

How to find these jobs

  • The gov.je jobs board, which lets you filter by whether you have lived in Jersey for more or less than five years.
  • The island's newspaper jobs site and local news classifieds. Search for "staff accommodation" or "live-in".
  • The Jersey Hospitality Association, the industry body, which represented more than 200 businesses in 2023, runs careers fairs and has worked with the Government on overseas recruitment.
  • Household staffing agencies for nanny, housekeeper and live-in couple roles.
  • Direct approaches to hotels and growers, since some jobs are never advertised.

Red flags

  • You are asked to pay for a job, a visa or a work permit. The employer pays for the permit. Gov.je warns of fake job offers that ask for visa fees by money transfer, sometimes for a visa that does not exist, and says a genuine employer would never ask. Report them to the States of Jersey Police.
  • No interview, misnamed places, poor spelling or contact numbers that do not work.
  • No signed contract setting out hours, pay and deductions before you travel.
  • An accommodation charge above £152.60 a week on a minimum wage job.
  • A loan for flights or visa costs that you must repay with extra. You cannot be required to repay more than you borrowed.
  • A home your status does not allow, such as a Qualified house when you are Standard. Our guide to rooms to rent has a checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a job in Jersey with accommodation?

Yes, mainly in hotels and restaurants during the April to September season, and on farms. Some live-in care, nanny and housekeeping jobs include a room.

Do hotels in Jersey offer staff accommodation?

Some do, usually "subject to availability". If the kitchen or bathroom is shared, it falls outside the tenancy law. If it is a self-contained flat let because of your job, it can be ended on seven days' written notice once the job ends.

How much can an employer charge for accommodation in Jersey?

For minimum wage purposes, no more than £152.60 a week (£21.80 a day) for accommodation, or £203.35 a week (£29.05 a day) with three meals a day, from 1 April 2026. Anything above that reduces your pay for minimum wage purposes.

Can foreigners get jobs in Jersey with visa sponsorship?

Yes. Jersey's equivalent is a work permit, which the employer applies for and pays for. Temporary permits cover farm, hospitality, construction and fishing work for up to nine or 12 months; skilled permits need a job at A level standard or above and English at B1.

When should I apply for seasonal work in Jersey?

Between January and March for a summer hospitality job starting in April. Permits can be applied for up to three months ahead and take about three weeks, with roughly three more for the visa.
