Registered nurses, mental health nurses included, are on the list of roles that can bring Licensed status below the usual £60,000 threshold, so a permanent full-time post lets you rent or buy a home and gives free hospital care from your first day. Government recruits from off-island get a £5,000 relocation payment and removals up to £5,000, repayable on a sliding scale if they leave within three years, and can get up to 12 months in subsidised accommodation. You need NMC registration plus local registration with the Jersey Care Commission.
In Jersey the job decides where you can live, so a post's status matters as much as its salary. Our jobs guide has the wider rules.
Who employs nurses
Health and Care Jersey, part of the Government of Jersey, works from three main bases: Jersey General Hospital in St Helier for acute care, community and social services in St Helier, and mental health services in St Saviour, where Orchard Ward, a 16-room unit at Clinique Pinel, took over from the old Orchard House ward in June 2024. Mental health nurses (RMNs) are on the same pay scale as other nurses.
Gov.je says Jersey's grades mirror the NHS Agenda for Change bands, with Grade 4 equal to Band 5. The standard week is 37.5 hours, with five weeks and three days' annual leave plus bank holidays. Staff must work full time for their first five years of residence, with limited exceptions. Newly qualified nurses get a 12-month supervised period.
Nurse and midwife pay in 2026
Government nursing pay rose 3.8 per cent on 1 January 2026, after 4 per cent in 2025 and 8 per cent in 2024.
| Grade | 2026 annual pay | Note |
|---|---|---|
| NMP4 | £54,810 to £55,962 | Newly qualified nurses and operating department practitioners |
| NMP5 | £63,557 to £64,990 | Newly qualified midwives |
| NM04 | £57,113 to £64,466 | Equivalent to NHS Band 5 |
| NM05 | £66,423 to £71,038 | |
| NM06 | £75,921 to £80,684 | |
| NM07 | £83,223 to £87,989 | |
| NM08 | £88,467 to £99,656 |
Two senior grades above NM08 run up to £124,481. Shift and standby payments come on top. The October 2025 recruitment brochure quotes the 2025 Grade 4 range, £55,021 to £62,106.
Registration: NMC and the Jersey Care Commission
You must be on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register and also registered locally with the Jersey Care Commission. Gov.je says local registration is renewed every year at no charge, and HR helps with your first application; keeping both current is your job.
On 11 March 2026 the States Assembly unanimously adopted the Health and Social Care Professionals Register (Jersey) Law, which will make practising without local registration an offence carrying up to 12 months' imprisonment and a fine. It was reported to come into force in early 2027; the law lets the Minister set a registration fee by Order.
Licensed status and what it means for housing
Control of Housing and Work guidance, published on 25 November 2025, lists "nurse" and "specialist community public health nurse" among roles that can be Licensed below the £60,000 threshold, provided you hold NMC and Jersey Care Commission registration and the employer is the Government of Jersey or an "eligible entity". Licensed roles must be full time (more than 25 hours a week) and permanent. Midwives are not named on the list, but newly qualified midwives start on £63,557, above the threshold, so a permanent full-time midwifery post qualifies on pay.
With Licensed status you can:
- rent or buy one home, including Qualified property, as your main residence;
- use all hospital services free from your first day, where most working newcomers wait six months;
- bring a partner, who can register as Entitled for Work Only and take any job.
The status is tied to the post: leave it and you lose the right to stay in Qualified property. Our housing qualifications guide explains each status and our renting guide the notice rules.
Nursing associates and healthcare assistants are on the Licensed for Lease Only list, which lets you rent Qualified property on a lease under nine years but not buy. Healthcare assistants need at least £34,000 and an employer registered with the Jersey Care Commission. A permanent nursing associate post on careers.gov.je, closing on 4 October 2026, paid £45,665 to £47,784 at 2025 rates; the 2026 rate for that grade (NM03) is £47,400 to £49,600.
The relocation package
The Government's relocation policy, effective 27 March 2026, covers full-time staff recruited from off-island into a licensed post, permanent or on a fixed-term contract of 18 months or more.
| What you get | Detail |
|---|---|
| Relocation payment | £5,000 with your first salary, taxed through payroll |
| Removals | Up to £5,000, claimed within 12 months of starting |
| Travel | Fares to Jersey for you, your partner and dependants |
| House-hunting visit | Flights and up to two nights' bed and breakfast, once |
| Relocation support | Orientation and help finding a home |
From outside the UK, removals and visit travel are normally paid only from the UK, though managers have discretion for shortage roles. If your partner also joins the Government, they get the £5,000 payment but not a second package.
Resign or be dismissed early and you repay the removals costs and the net relocation payment:
| Completed service | You repay |
|---|---|
| Under 1 year | 100 per cent |
| 1 to 2 years | 66 per cent |
| 2 to 3 years | 33 per cent |
| 3 years or more | Nothing |
Fixed-term contracts under 18 months get no package, but may get a £500 a month rental allowance and £1,500 a year travel allowance, both taxed, if you keep a home outside Jersey.
Key worker accommodation
Under the Priority Key Role Accommodation Policy, effective 15 May 2026, priority key roles, approved each year and likely to be drawn from health, can get transitional accommodation for up to 12 months, initially at up to 80 per cent of market rent, reviewed at six months. You need a permanent contract or a fixed-term one of 18 months or more, at least 25 hours a week. There is no secure tenure or appeal over the home offered, and Licensed staff judged able to afford private rent are not eligible. Your line manager applies for you.
Private sector nursing: care homes, GP surgeries and charities
Outside the Government, a nursing post brings Licensed status below £60,000 only if the employer is an eligible entity. The guidance names:
- care homes registered with the Jersey Care Commission whose residents include people on Long-Term Care benefit;
- registered home care agencies serving people on that benefit or children with funded care;
- GP surgeries, where the post provides services that attract a Health Insurance Fund subsidy or contract payment;
- registered community nursing services.
Elsewhere in the private sector the route is open only to professionals with five years' residence, and private employers set their own relocation terms. Family Nursing & Home Care, the charity contracted by the Government for community nursing, says most of its vacancies require five years' residence unless the advert says otherwise. In April 2026 one island care home advertised for registered nurses at £25.45 an hour on 42- or 48-hour contracts, roughly £55,600 to £63,500 a year.
Agency and bank nursing
Agency nurses at Health and Care Jersey fell from 39 to 15 between January 2025 and January 2026, the Health Minister told the States, and the service is building its own staff bank so employees get first call on short-term shifts. In 2025, 22 agency nursing and midwifery staff took permanent posts.
Agency workers on Government placements can get temporary, likely shared, accommodation, but a short placement will not normally bring Licensed status, which is for permanent roles, or the relocation package.
How to apply
Government nursing jobs are on careers.gov.je. Create an account, upload a CV (up to 2MB) and set job alerts; interview invitations come by email. Each advert names the hiring manager, and Health and Care Jersey recruitment is on [email protected] or +44 1534 448230. Adverts say whether you must already be "entitled for work"; if the status a post carries is unclear, ask before you resign.
Nurses trained outside the UK
To join the NMC register from overseas you pass its Test of Competence: a computer-based test of numeracy and theory, then a practical exam, the OSCE, taken at an NMC test centre in the UK. Gov.je warns you may need to work in the UK for a while to get onto the register.
British and Irish citizens need no work permit; most others do. Under the policy updated in January 2026 the employer applies and pays, permits run for up to three years at first, and you need English at B1 or above. Health roles also need criminal record certificates from every country you lived in for over 12 months in the last ten years, a UK DBS check, two years' relevant experience and vetted qualifications. Allow about three weeks for the permit and three for the visa; family can join only if the permit runs over 12 months.
Pay against the cost of living
These figures use 2026 Jersey rules for a single person with no allowances, before pension contributions; our tax guide explains the calculation.
| Salary (2026) | Income tax | Social security | Long-term care | Take-home a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| £54,810 (newly qualified) | £8,726 | £3,289 | £654 | about £3,510 |
| £57,113 (Grade 4, first step) | £9,324 | £3,427 | £699 | about £3,640 |
| £64,466 (Grade 4, top step) | £11,236 | £3,868 | £843 | about £4,040 |
Our October 2026 snapshot of asking rents put a one-bed flat at roughly £1,300 to £1,700 a month (an estimate; Numbeo's crowd-sourced central St Helier average was about £1,380 on 28 October), or roughly 37 to 48 per cent of a newly qualified nurse's take-home, which is why the subsidised first year matters. You also pay the full cost of GP visits for your first six months; see our healthcare and cost of living guides.
Frequently asked questions
How much do nurses earn in Jersey?
In 2026 newly qualified nurses at Health and Care Jersey earn £54,810 to £55,962 and a Grade 4 staff nurse, equivalent to NHS Band 5, £57,113 to £64,466. Newly qualified midwives start on £63,557.
Do nurses get a relocation package in Jersey?
Yes, from the Government: a £5,000 taxed payment, removals up to £5,000, travel and a house-hunting visit. You repay all of it if you leave within a year, 66 per cent in the second year and 33 per cent in the third.
Can nurses buy a house in Jersey?
Yes, with Licensed status, which a permanent full-time post with the Government or an eligible employer can carry. You can buy one home to live in, but the status ends if you leave the post.
Can I work as a nurse in Jersey if I trained abroad?
Yes, once you pass the NMC's Test of Competence, which includes a practical exam in the UK. Unless you are British or Irish, your employer must also get you a work permit.
Do nurses need to register with the Jersey Care Commission?
Yes, as well as with the NMC. Local registration is renewed every year at no charge, and a law adopted in March 2026, due in force in early 2027, will make practising without it an offence.
